Lift Your Mood with Food

I grew up in a very food-orientated family. My mother always cooked from scratch and still does. My brother is a chef. I love cooking and baking. Even my father started cooking when he retired.

We had three gardens and a field; we grew potatoes and grains on the field and vegetables in the gardens. We picked raspberries and blackberries in nature, salads and strawberries in the gardens.

You might think I grew up as a vegetarian, far from it. Each year, my extended family bought a pig from a local farmer and slaughtered it at my grandmother's house. In a humongous standalone stove, sausages are cooked, which at the same time make a hearty soup. No, I definitely didn't grow up as a vegetarian. But I think I grew up pretty healthy.

Without knowing, I grew up Ayurvedically, not in India, but in a small village in Germany. We lived with the seasons and mainly ate what the seasons yielded. Everything got used up and made into jams, preserves, pickles etc.

The Ayurveda connection revealed itself only many years later when I started practising Yoga. At that time, I was a veggie, which was not very exciting. This changed dramatically when I was introduced to Ayurvedic cooking. The spices and the taste were just phenomenal, AND I was hooked.

But Ayurvedic cooking the Indian way didn't come naturally. Using tempering seemed complicated, all the spices were totally foreign to me. Luckily, my teacher's wife, Veenaji, offered regular cooking workshops. Later on, my mother-in-law taught me how to be organised in the kitchen. Also, she cooked everything from scratch. No effort was too much; let's make a 'quick' chutney, 'shall we have a sweet dish as well'. Everything seemed to get rustled up in no time for me. These were big things, though.

Food has always played a significant role, from growing to processing to cooking, eating, and healing myself. It is even fixed in my horoscope that I should offer food.

My path slowly led me to share how to cook ayurvedic food in the way I learned via cooking workshops and offering an ayurvedic soup or dal during my teacher training course meetings to keep the students grounded and nourished.

"Katja, you should write a cookbook" was the sentiment.

However, life led me to create an online course instead.

Throughout my Yoga and Ayurveda career, I have encountered many women who struggle with either cooking, getting organised, or establishing healthy eating habits. Does that resonate with you?
