Restorative Yoga

What To Expect?

The discipline of Yoga has numerous forms and ways to practise; Restorative Yoga is one of them.

We can feel healthy, energetic and ready for a strong asana-based practice. Sometimes, our focus might be more inward, which makes pranayama- or meditative practices more accessible.

In this day and age, there are often times when we feel rushed off our feet, drained and exhausted. We may also recover from an illness that leaves us low in energy. We might be tending to our children’s demands and, in comparison, would like to practise something that is not strenuous. Or, we may feel absolutely fine and prefer a very gentle practice. In whichever situation you find yourself in, Restorative Yoga could be just the right practice for you.

In Restorative Yoga, we work with many props. You are practising asana (yoga postures) but in such a supported way that your body stays in that particular posture completely passively. As support, we use bolsters, blankets, blocks, belts, cushions, and whatever is needed to enable our body to be completely at ease and benefit from that particular posture.

The Benefits of Restorative Yoga are:

  • a deep sense of rest and relaxation.
  • lowering of the heartbeat and blood pressure.
  • relaxation of the brain and nervous system.
  • a time out in quietness.
  • opportunity to re-energise.
  • allow healing.

Here is what one of my students said about the benefits:

I rested in the afternoon, I had a nagging pain in my upper back between the shoulder blades the entire day yesterday. After doing your restorative session, the pain just vanished.

Postures are usually held between 5 and 20 minutes.

Restorative Yoga can be practised by everybody, with every ability and age.
