7 Ayurvedic Tips for a Healthy Heart

The Valentine’s Day edition.

It’s nearly time; Valentine’s Day is upon us.

A day that we dedicate to someone we love. Since the times of the ancient Greeks, love has been associated with our hearts.

Ayurveda sees our heart as the home of our immune system. Did you know that?

Our immune system is the essence of our health; Ayurveda calls it Ojas. So, the heart is the seat of our immune system, Ojas, and in return, Ojas is said to strengthen our hearts. Isn’t that wonderful?

What can we do to nourish our hearts, immune systems and love?

Usually, we give and receive flowers, chocolate, or jewellery on Valentine’s Day, do you too?

Or are you looking at some alternative gifts? Ayurveda Pura offers some hidden treasures, both luxurious and nourishing for the heart and the immune system. Here are a couple of suggestions:

When we start to strengthen our hearts, all other aspects of our life get stronger too.

Here are 7 simple ayurvedic tips to help nourish your heart:

Yoga and Meditation for the Heart

The sister sciences of Ayurveda and Yoga offer complete holistic physical, mental and emotional health.

Regular Yoga practice not only helps on a physical level but also helps to maintain and produce hormones to strengthen your heart and immune system.

Eat a balanced Diet

Ayurveda reminds us to prepare food mindfully and with love to nourish our body, mind and emotions.

With the weather getting cold, focus more on warm cooked foods like soups, stews or steamed salads.

A little bit of sweetness is great for the heart! Especially if it’s easy to prepare and full of Ayurvedic nourishment.

Ayurveda stresses the importance of mindful and loving food preparation to support overall well-being. During colder weather, prioritise warm, cooked dishes like soups, stews, and steamed salads. A small amount of sweetness can bring joy and support heart health, especially when it’s simple to make and rich in Ayurvedic nourishment.

Here is a simple recipe for energy-giving, nourishing and super tasty Ojas balls:

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup Medjool dates

  • 1 cup oats

  • 1 cup almonds and/or cashews nuts

  • 2 tbsp raw cocoa (or cacao nibs)

  • 2 tbsp coconut oil

Method:
Add nuts to a food processor and whiz until fine chunks
Add cocoa & oats (and any other powders you want to add) - whiz again
Add dates and coconut oil and process until rollable - add more coconut oil if it needs
Roll into balls and chill.

Get sufficient Sleep

By establishing a regular sleep routine, you will be able to get enough quality sleep each night. This will help promote physical and mental health and promote a more balanced lifestyle.

Did you know that many animals hibernate during the winter to build strength for the warmer seasons ahead? The same holds true for humans.

Adequate deep sleep is crucial for a healthy heart and immune system. This restful state nourishes the nervous system, balances the hormone system, and strengthens the immune system. Ayurveda suggests sleeping at least 8 hours each night, with a consistent bedtime routine.

Keeping a regular sleep schedule by going to bed and waking up simultaneously each day helps maintain your body’s natural sleep rhythm.

Exercise regularly

We, as human beings, are creatures of community and movement. Lack of physical movement does impact the heart and immune system.

But most importantly, lack of physical activity and movement also impact mental and emotional health.

Something as simple as a 15-minute walk daily will change your attitude, energy and well-being.

Humans are social and active creatures. A lack of physical movement can harm both the heart and the immune system.

But perhaps even more impactful on mental and emotional health.

A daily 15-minute walk can enhance your mood, energy, and overall well-being.

Avoid smoking

Would you believe that I smoked in my younger years? Yes, I did, and from my own experience, I know that smoking is not a good habit. It surely impacts our entire body, including our breathing, heart and immune system.

It’s never too late to stop and decide to live a healthier lifestyle.

Tidy Home - tidy Mind

Cluttered home - cluttered mind.  Returning to a home filled with positive energy and love is incredibly comforting and fulfilling. Similarly, starting the day in an office that motivates you towards reaching your goals can provide great encouragement.

Vaastu shastra, another sister science to both Yoga and Ayurveda, knew all along about the energy of the spaces and how to arrange them in order to maintain good health and ease.

Follow the Principles of Ayurveda

According to Ayurvedic principles, you can enhance your heart health and well-being by taking certain actions. To get personalised guidance for your individual needs, it is advisable to seek the advice of a competent Ayurvedic professional. Scheduling an ayurvedic consultation could be a great way to start this journey towards rejuvenation.
