How I Came to Teaching Yoga

This might be helpful. I started practising Yoga at a Yoga school just to please my colleague. I wanted to learn to meditate and had absolutely no idea what to expect. You might know that I have had scoliosis since my early teens and suffered from backaches ever since. So, my first Yoga class totally threw me. I didn't really fancy going, but didn't want to let my colleague down either. So after this 45-minute session, I felt incredible, light and pain-free. I was hooked.

I started to attend regularly, first once a week and, after a couple of months, twice a week. I absolutely loved it.

My teacher offered Yoga teacher training. When the next course approached, my teacher asked me if I wanted to join, and she thought I would be a good fit.

I said 'No'. I really couldn't see myself teaching Yoga. But I was very interested in the philosophy.

My teacher asked me two more times. The third time, I said 'Yes'. But I came only for the philosophy part.

These were four tough years (yes, 4 years were the only option then).

In hindsight, that decision ultimately led me here, doing what I am doing now!

So, the decision might not always be crystal clear for you, but somehow, it finds its way to you.

Let's talk first about why you think Yoga teacher training.

Why Consider Yoga Teacher Training?

Yoga teacher training is obviously, first and foremost, about learning to teach. It is also a journey of self-discovery, growth, and transformation.

It's an opportunity to:

  • Deepen your understanding of yoga philosophy, anatomy, and practice.

  • Cultivate confidence in your abilities on and off the mat.

  • Find a supportive community of like-minded individuals.

  • Open the door to a new career path or enhance your profession with yoga expertise.

Whether your goal is to teach or expand your knowledge, a high-quality training program will meet you where you are with your aspirations.

Love to Practise = Love to Teach?

This might be the biggest step for most people. You love your Yoga practice. But how is it to stand in front of a class and lead your student through a Yoga class rather than enjoy being led?

That is the difference!

You need to know your asanas and how to lead your students into and out of the different poses. How to sequence them.

You guide their breath.

You have to find your voice and learn to hold space.

And you might say, 'That's all ok, but I can't do all these fancy poses!'

Yoga Teacher Training: Beyond the Fancy Poses

One common misconception about Yoga teacher training is that it requires mastering all the advanced or "fancy" poses.

In reality, Yoga teacher training is not about achieving physical perfection but about understanding the essence of Yoga—its philosophy, alignment principles, and how to guide others safely and effectively.

The focus is cultivating self-awareness, building a solid foundation, and learning to adapt the practice for diverse bodies and abilities.

Did you know that Yoga postures are only one part of Yoga? There is so much more depth to it. Yoga is a state of the mind! And not standing on your head. The journey towards this skill might help you though to get closer to this state.

How to Choose the Right Yoga Teacher Training Program

With so many Yoga teacher training programs available, choosing the right one can feel overwhelming. Here are key factors to consider:

  1. Accreditation: Ensure the program is accredited by a reputable organisation.

  2. Curriculum: Look for a well-rounded curriculum that includes asana, pranayama, anatomy, teaching methodology, and philosophy.

  3. Teacher Experience: Research the lead trainer's qualifications, teaching style, and experience. A seasoned teacher with a strong background can make all the difference.

  4. Class Size: Smaller class sizes often mean more personalised attention and mentorship.

  5. Flexibility: Consider whether the program fits your schedule, whether part-time, full-time, or online.

  6. Community and Support: The right program fosters a sense of connection and provides ongoing support beyond the training.

Is it the Right Time for You?

Deciding to enrol in Yoga teacher training is a deeply personal choice. Reflect on the following questions to determine if the time is right:

  • Do you feel a strong desire to learn more about Yoga?

  • Are you ready to invest time and energy in personal growth?

  • Do you envision yourself sharing Yoga with others, even informally?

  • Is your current lifestyle conducive to committing to a structured program?

If your answers lean toward "yes," this might be the perfect opportunity to take the leap.

A word from my experience.

In each teacher training course, there have been pregnancies, divorces, marriages and deaths. Just as Yoga is life, and there is really no on and off the mat, the training aspect is the same.

We can't plan for all eventualities. We learn to integrate the situations we find ourselves in.

During my last teacher training course, one student fell pregnant just before the start of the course. So, we were there together through fatigue, frustrations, stress and after the birth, with the baby, lots of aunties to hold the baby, rock him to sleep and so forth. Adapting is an integral part of teaching Yoga.
